Le geste de tirer la langue constituait un défi rituel pratiqué par les guerriers maori. The top represents the tongue coming out of a stylized head. The gesture of pulling out the tongue was a ritual challenge practiced by Maori warriors. The weapon consists of three parts: The Arero (the tongue), used to stab the opponent, The Upoko (the Janus head), the base from which the Arero protrudes, and the Ate or tinana (liver), the long flat blade that is also used for dodging and parade.
